I know it seems I like to offer out the nebbiolo-based wines of Piedmont often. The truth is that nebbiolo is my favorite grape, so you can imagine my thrill that we had the pleasure to taste the new releases from Paolo Scavino yesterday with Andrea Ostorero visiting from the winery.
We tasted the fresh and tasty ’22 Langhe, all the new ’20 Barolo (normale and crus), and the truly stunning and rare 2016 Riserva. The Riserva is only the second one ever made (the last one was 2011) and this time it was made by harvesting selected bunches from 5 different vineyard sites, deep chilled to account for different harvest days, and all fermented together before aging. We won’t see very many of these bottles, it was an epic wine that I left in my glass for many hours to savor!
The 2020s showed beautifully, each cru representing the different soil types. I liked the Ravera and Prapo the most, but tomorrow I might think different. They are still so young with so much potential. The Bric del Fiasc, with its "crossroads" of soil types, is so tight and needs the most time. Although I would guess that is always true of that vineyard. Each vineyard they bottle is from a different soil type, geography and aspect of the Barolo region. You can really taste the differences!
Sadly, Enrico Scavino recently passed away. He was the great grandson of Lorenzo, and son of Paolo. And he was the one who came up with the idea to ferment the grapes of the Bric del Fiasc separately, as he stated to Kerin O’Keefe “'Every year, we noticed that grapes from Bric del Fiasc were always the best.'" But his daughters Enrica (marketing and sales) and Elisa (winemaking) will continue the family traditions of making fantastic wines of the Langhe. (For more about Enrico, there is a nice article and this photo from Kerin O’Keefe on her website.)
2021 will be the 100th vintage of the winery, and while we wait for these new releases, as well as potentially more library releases, we do have the below wines In Stock now!
