"Tolpuddle Vineyard...was acquired in 2011 by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW (owners of Shaw & Smith in the Adelaide Hills) and the pair now make a stunning single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this mature Coal River Valley site.
Although Coal River Valley is in Tasmania’s warmer, drier south, its distinctive raciness is, for Hill Smith, a product of the fact that, while ‘the Adelaide Hills are cool, southern Tasmania is cold’, plus his belief that Tolpuddle Vineyard is ‘one of the great single vineyards of Australia’." - Decanter
"Tasmania is a remarkable place to grow grapes, so in early 2011 we set off for a look and ended up buying a vineyard. Tolpuddle Vineyard was established in 1988 and it took its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs: English convicts transported to Tasmania for forming an agricultural union. The leader of the Martyrs, George Loveless, served some of his sentence working on a property near Richmond, part of which is now Tolpuddle Vineyard. The climate is cool and dry - ideal conditions to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of exceptional quality." - Winery

#7 James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of Australia 2021
99 JS
This really asserts itself at the top echelon of chardonnay, in a context that extends far beyond the shores of the tiny island state of Tasmania. Already in such a great place, with aromas of white peach, lemon, lemon curd and very precisely curated sulphides adding interest. There’s wet chalk, lemon peel and gentle hazelnutty oak in play as well. The palate has seamless, layered and fresh citrus and peach flavors, as well as a stream of pithy grapefruit and peach on offer. Acidity holds the finish long and true. This is one of the most elegant vintages of this wine, reminiscent of the 2014. Oak chimes in so subtly on the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.–James Suckling
2020 Tolpuddle Pinot Noir Tasmania (750ML)
#12 James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of Australia 2021
99 JS
This is a wine we have not yet seen from Tolpuddle. It has such well-curated complexity and whole-bunch influence (40%) sits in the sweet spot. It is concentrated, yet so elegant and the vivid freshness that pervades every aspect of the nose and palate is striking. Aromas of red fruit, such as raspberry, strawberry, red cherry and red plum are framed in spice and fragrance. The palate has such impressive definition and clarity and the tannins are so detailed, fine and clear-cut. Concentrated red and darker cherries are fleshy, yet elegantly focused, and the acidity laces it all up so clearly. So drinkable now and for a decade at least. Screw cap. –James Suckling
