In 1970, convinced by the estate’s potential, Baron Philippe de Rothschild acquired what remained of the once renowned Château Clerc Milon, which is nestled between Mouton and Lafite. In the last 20 years, large sums of money have been spent in improving this old 5th Growth estate, including the creation of a modern gravity-fed, solar powered winery on the property in 2011. The improvements have been marked, with consistently great wines over the last decade including an outstanding 2022.

We are also delighted to offer a 2022 from Saint-Julien that seems to be getting better and better, Château Branaire-Ducru. "I honestly think the best example of this château that I have ever tasted En Primeur (and god I hate it when critics say that)."Jane Anson. Always one of the most classically structured wines of the Left Bank, the excellent Branaire-Ducru is a St-Julien of great finesse and quality and has earned a reputation for being a pleasure to drink, and great value.

We really enjoyed our visit to Château Talbot this en primeur, and not just because the Grand Vin was outstanding - the second wine, Connétable, and the white, the Caillou Blanc, were excellent too! "Readers will love the 2022 Château Talbot, one of the finest vintages from this château that I can recall - pure, layered, elegant - Bravo." Jeb Dunnuck

The Cuveliers, owners of Château Léoville-Poyferré, have just released three super 2022s in their line-up - Pavillon, the 2nd wine of Léoville-Poyferré, and Château Moulin Riche, both from Saint-Julien, and Château Le Crock from Saint-Estèphe.

During our En Primeur tasting trip we had the opportunity to visit the beautiful Saint-Emilion property, Chateau de Pressac. We tasted the 2022 vintage and a selection of older vintages with the owner, Jean-François Quenin, and the GVWM tasting team was blown away by the quality of the wines!

Count Stephan von Neipperg has just released two of his superb Saint-Emilions, the 2022 Château La Mondotte and the 2022 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière. The von Nieppbergs, who have been making wine since the 13th Century, acquired these two properties in Saint-Emilion in 1971, and raised them both up to reach Premier Grand Cru Classé B status in 2012. Both are farmed organically. La Mondotte is a tiny 4.5 hectare vineyard on the Saint-Emlion plateau, and produces a more perfumed, aromatic style than that of Canon-la-Gaffelière, situated at the bottom of the slope beneath the town, which is typically defined by power and elegance.

Last but certainly not least, the wines of Château Carignan. We got to taste some back vintages, and the new 2022s, from the estate. They really do stand up incredibly well to their more illustrious neighbors - we have a very loyal following for this superb value for good reason, and the 2022 is another excellent vintage!

"2022 is certainly the greatest overall vintage I have ever tasted." - Andy Lench of Bordeaux Wine Locators on his 37th vintage tasted en primeur.

"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. They are exciting...it was a joyous and fascinating experience to taste so many special wines. And there was high quality from top to bottom. The 2022 vintage really is something unique." - James Suckling

2022 Clerc Milon (Pauillac)
GVWM Standout Mid-Range Wine
95-96 JS / 94-96 JD / 95 JA / 95 DE / 93-95 WA / 93-95 WI / 91-93 VM

As to the Grand Vin 2022 Château Clerc Milon, it reminds me of the 2018 with its full-bodied, ripe, yet elegant style. Cassis, graphite, espresso roast, and lead pencil notes define the aromatics, and it has a beautiful spine of acidity, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It shows the ripe, exuberant yet structured style of the vintage beautifully. The blend is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Carmenère, harvested between the 9th and 26th of September, with an alcohol content of 14.5%, a pH of 3.83, and an IPT of 74. The élevage here is 55% new French oak. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes. - Jeb Dunnuck

A great effort in 2022 with such excellent precision and detail to the tannins and fruit. 2022 Branaire Ducru (Saint Julien)

97 DE / 96-97 JS / 95-97 WA / 95-97 JD / 95-97 VM / 94-96 WI

One of the standouts of the vintage that impressed equally on three different occasions. Fragrant and expressive on the nose, lovely scents and dark fruits. Smooth and crisp, silky but concentrated, such precision and detail straight away with succulent and juicy acidity. There’s concentration no doubt, it’s ripe and intense, the dark perfumed blackcurrants and black cherries give a serious backbone and tension to the wine, while the minty, stony freshness carries the flavour and gives the energy and definition. Excellently weighted on the palate, with structure and a mouthwatering sensation that comes in once the weight settles. So well constructed with a beautiful texture and overall integration of all the elements. Exceptional quality and drinkability on offer with a delicious salty, graphite and flint finish that puts you at the estate. Overlook this at your peril. 2.5% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.65pH. Harvest 12 - 24 September. 60% grand vin production. A yield of 34hl/ha. Tasted three times. This vintage was the first to be made 100% in the new cellar with double the number of vats than were available in 2020 for more precise fermentations. HVE3 certified. Harvest 12 September - 24 September. - Georgina Hindle, Decanter

Inky dark fruit, graphite, lavender, dried herbs and bittersweet chocolate abound in a Mondotte that impresses with its energy and vibrancy.
