The 1959 Canon replicates its impressive showing from 2017’s vertical at the property. Clear and lucid in color with minimal bricking, it has a wonderful bouquet with vibrant redcurrant and crushed strawberry fruit, hints of liquorice and hung game. The palate is just as good, beautifully balanced with finely chiseled tannins, a perfect line of acidity and quite a grippy finish. Even though this bottle came directly from the property, I remember the previous example possessing a little more substance on the finish. Nevertheless, it could be considered as one of the last great Canon’s of yesteryear before things went a little wayward in the Seventies and Eighties. Tasted at a private dinner in Bordeaux. Due to the fact that the 1959 was undoubtedly made from relatively young vines (the 1956 freeze caused a significant loss of vines at Canon), this bottle performed spectacularly. The sweet, chocolatey, jammy, black-cherry-scented nose and opaque garnet color revealed few signs of age. The wine exhibited an underlying herbaceous quality (young vines?), but its superb richness and chewy, viscous, thick flavors were sensational. There is enough richness and tannin for the wine to evolve for another 15-20 years. It is a magnificent example of Canon! - Robert Parker
