This shows ripeness and intensity with chocolate, spice and walnut character. It’s full-bodied with round, juicy tannins. Wet-earth and mushroom undertones. - James Suckling
A consistently successful Neipperg wine in Pessac, bringing some of his signature glamour to the Left Bank. This is a big shouldered wine, feels fairly high in alcohol and not one that you are going to ignore. I wonder if this style does better on the limestones of St Emilion where there is greater natural acidity as a counterbalance, but no question that this has plenty of texture and swagger. The 2019 Clos Marsalette was picked from 20 September to 5 October at 54hl/ha and matured in 35% new oak. It has a generous, slightly gamey bouquet with opulent red fruit, hints of brown spices developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins. Good weight and density here, though it would have benefitted from more brightness and vivacity on the finish. This year I might just prefer the white version. - Neal Martin
