Critic Scores, Reviews & Descriptions

2013 Domenico Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj
96 Wine Advocate

This wine was not produced in 2012. The excellent 2013 Barolo Aeroplan Servaj (with fruit from the clay soils of Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba) is a powerful, generous and dramatic wine that promises a very long drinking future ahead. The fruit is dark, rich and exuberant. There is a touch of black cherry sweetness that is very specific to this growing site and the heavier soils that characterize it. At this young stage, the wine is slightly austere and rigid, especially in terms of mouthfeel. This is completely expected, especially in a cool vintage such as 2013. The wine needs time to unfold and blossom like a rose. Monica Larner – The Wine Advcate

2014 Domenico Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj
95 The Wine Advocate / 95 James Suckling

In terms of power and intensity, this is always the highest-flying wine in the Domenico Clerico lineup. The 2014 Barolo Aeroplan Servaj reaches those altitudes thanks to the quality of the fruit, all sourced from the Baudana vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba where some of the most powerful Barolos are born. The wine is solid and decisive in personality, imparting long-lasting flavors of dark berry, spice, moist earth and freshly shaved truffle. You feel that intensity grow, especially as the wine washes over the palate in thick waves. The tannins are dry and solid. The 2014 vintage was not easy, but Aeroplan Servaj glides straight past those difficulties. Monica Larner – The Wine Advocate

2015 Domenico Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj
96 The Wine Advocate / 96 James Suckling

The Domenico Clerico 2015 Barolo Aeroplan Servaj draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, specifically from the Baudana cru with vines planted in 1994. The wine shows the extra fiber and power that typically comes so naturally to this subzone. The bouquet is characterized by a point of bright fruit, like red cherry or cassis, backed by layers of smoke, ash, balsam herb, blood orange and earthy whiffs of white truffle. There is ample red fruit energy, but you get savory and smoky tones as well with clove, nutmeg and tar. It shows significant fruit weight and elegance. The richer soils of this site create a wine that can withstand a little more oak. Aeroplan Servaj is aged in barrique and then botte for 12 months each. Monica Larner – The Wine Advocate

2016 Domenico Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj
97 The Wine Advocate

Aeroplan Servaj or "little airplane" is the affectionate nickname that Domenico's father gave to his young "free spirited" son. The Domenico Clerico 2016 Barolo Aeroplan Servaj is tightly wound and nervous at this young stage. The wine needs some coaxing before it relaxes to release wild cherry, candied orange peel, tilled earth and rusty nail. There is some distant sweetness in the primary fruit, but the wine is mostly defined by its very sophisticated, rich, sultry and savory sides. Between these two vintages (2015 and 2016), this wine is poised to ultimately deliver better results once it gets further down its evolutionary track. It delivers impeccable balance and linearity. Monica Larner – The Wine Advocate
