"One of my favorite vintage ports - the 1970 Fonseca - a great port in full maturity, but capable of lasting another 25-30 years.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate Hedonist’s Gazette, 98 Points

“An extraordinary Vintage Port, the powerful, exotic, multidimensional 1970 boasts a dark plum color with light amber at the rim. An intoxicatingly fragrant perfume of incense, liquorice, caramel, black and red fruits, and notions of saddle leather soars from the glass of its unctuously textured, full-bodied, velvety offering. This magnificent Port is finally hitting full maturity, where it should rest for another 20+years.” Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Some people may enjoy this wine's rather fat, rich and powerful fruit now, but I still find it too young for drinking. Deeply colored, with smoky mint, tar and fruit aromas, full-bodied, with concentrated fruit flavors and plenty of tannins.
–James Suckling, Wine Spectator

Tasted at the Vintners Company’s 650th anniversary celebration at Vintners Hall, the Fonseca 1970 was the finest bottle I have encountered. The bouquet opens beautifully with heady scents of clove, ginger, small red cherries, bergamot and allspice, displaying exquisite definition and harmony. The palate follows suit with lovely balance and poise in the mouth, notes of kirsch, shaved ginger and walnut building to an opulent, viscous finish that lacquers the mouth. Yet this bottle shows more control than the bottle tasted four years ago. The 1970 Fonseca is in a very nice place at the moment. You should join it. - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

I seldom taste Port. But on those rare occasions, with a nice group, and a Cuban cigar, a Behike on this night, it's quite a treat. Spicy notes of cinnamon, clove, black cherry liqueur and cocoa created the nose. But the best part of the experience was the silky, viscous layers of sweet, very ripe, cherries, chocolate and fig, in the long, opulent, spicy, warm, silky textured, rich finish.-Jeff Leve, Wine Cellar Insider, tasted 5/13

Mid brick-tawny. A meaty hint, with dark chocolate, fig and praline. Rich but with an underlying elegance and sophistication. Great length and lots of depth.-Tim Jackson MW, JancisRobinson
