Good deep red. Very stony aromas of blueberry, blackberry and violet. Densely packed, thick and sweet but given structure and grip by ripe acidity and noble tannins. Finishes strong, dense and very long, with sexy lingering sweetness. From vines planted in 1929 in an old quarry and a 1940 planting higher on the hillside, just below the forest.—Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Media
The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moines comes from 0.87-hectares of vine planted in 1928. It veers more towards the carefree, zesty fruit profile with orange blossom and fresh apricot infusing the pure red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit. This is feminine and nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a very pure, structured entry, a fine line of acidity and wonderful tension towards the finish. This is a seductive but nonchalant Gevrey-Chambertin with superb length that should age with style.
Note: from .87 ha parcel planted in 1928
Tasting note: This is both aromatically cooler and more elegant with ultra-pure essence of red pinot fruit that is liberally laced with mineral and wet stone hints. The mineral influence continues onto the lilting yet focused and intense medium-bodied flavors that vibrant with energy before concluding in an almost pungently saline-inflected, long and linear finish that exhibits just a touch of youthful austerity. This is a seriously good wine that is more elegant than usual. Sweet spot Outstanding. Drink 2022+ –Allen Meadows, Burghound
