Producer note: It has been a rocky road for one of Burgundy's long-time standout domaines since the tragic and premature death of Hubert Lignier's son Romain in 2004. Romain's passing triggered a bitter family squabble over inheritance issues that centered around the control of the vines that were either owned by or leased to Romain. For several years the vines were farmed partially by Hubert for Domaine Hubert Lignier or by Romain's widow Kellen under the name of Domaine Lucie et Auguste Lignier. Hubert (born 1936), who had already retired once, was advancing in age and in 2006 Hubert's elder son Laurent returned to the domaine to assist his father. For various reasons the division of the vines into two domaines proved to be untenable and not surprisingly wine quality suffered. Ultimately Kellen Lignier elected to return to the United States which facilitated the return of the vines that were either owned or controlled by her or her children to Hubert and Laurent. As such Laurent Lignier now exploits the equivalent of 13 ha of vines. Among these 13 ha are 9 ha that are farmed directly. In addition he vinifies the equivalent of another 4 ha through grape purchases. Lignier has converted all the vines he controls to an organic viticultural approach and he notes that the domaine will very likely be certified as such in the near future. To indicate those 2014s made from purchased fruit I have used the initial "N" for négociant. Note the 13s were revisited in bottle below.

Tasting note: While the nose is firmly reduced there is an excellent sense of underlying tension to the middle weight flavors that are also relatively refined and definitely more mineral-inflected, all wrapped in a lingering finish that is shaped by slightly ripe tannins. Recommended. Outstanding. Top Value --Allen Meadows, Burghound
