Very pronounced and wonderfully complex nose of persimmon, egg yolk, cinnamon, tarte tatin, caramel, mango pastry, apricot tart and spice box. The full-bodied palate feathers a fine line between sheer power, luscious dried fruit and laser-guided acidity. Very long and intense on the finish. Drink now or hold. The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Initial is absolutely impeccable. Its hard to know where to start. What is more impressive: the definition of aromas and flavors, or is it the wines sublime texture? The Initial is remarkable for its nuance, clarity and overall sense of harmony. The mousse is impeccably fine from start to finish, while the expression of Chardonnay is all elegance. Juicy apricots, peaches, flowers, crushed rocks and spices meld together on the seamless, utterly impeccable finish. Initial is Selosses largest production cuvee and is a blend of fruit from Avize, Cramant and Oger, all Grand Cru villages. Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
A voluptuous Champagne that entices with its lovely, lightly viscous texture and its fragrant thread of exotic spices that waft on the nose and wind through the palate. Shows impeccable balance, with a lithe spine of acidity providing focus and definition for the opulent range of blackberry coulis, kumquat and passion fruit, with notes of coffee liqueur, roasted nut and honeycomb. As I wrote last year, the November 2018 disgorgement of Anselme Selosse's NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Initial is a blend of the 2012, 2011 and 2010 vintages and derives from the lower-altitude slopes of Avize, Cramant and Oger, where the soils are richer in clay and yields higher. The wine is going from strength to strength, and it's showing brilliantly today, mingling notes of peach and honeycomb with nuances of dried fruit and toasted nuts. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's vinous and concentrated, with terrific mid-palate amplitude, a refined pinpoint mousse and a long, sapid finish. Lovely intense and invitingly rich baked bread aromas lead to a very dry, ripe, rich and powerful palate. Oxidative, fat and autolytic, it has a savoury and honeyed character that's both exotic and hedonistic. There's good mineral acidity to keep the show firmly on the road, but it's not the main component here, and it shows fabulous length on the finish.
