The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Fontenys wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, cherries and dark chocolate, complemented by hints of licorice, loamy soil and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, it's serious and concentrated, with a deep, elegantly muscular profile that will richly reward bottle age, concluding with a long finish.—William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru comes from a single 0.5-hectare parcel. It possesses quite a complex bouquet of violet-infused black fruit and a light marine influence (shucked oyster shells). The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy black cherry and mineral-rich blueberry fruit, fine backbone and a very saline finish. Excellent. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media
Note: from 80+ year old vines
Tasting note: A softly oaked nose offers up more elegant notes of plum, cassis and spice that are nuanced by ample earth and sauvage hints. There is outstanding volume to the muscular and naturally sweet, full-bodied and impressively concentrated flavors that brim with dry extract that imparts a velvety mouthfeel and buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the youthfully austere, nicely complex and bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. This needs to develop more depth but it's quite promising all the same. Outstanding. –Allen Meadows, Burghound
Rich purple, and with power in all the senses, quite a rich raspberry with a little blackcurrant, some savoury senses, not too tannic, with very good depth. I would not want the fruit to be any riper though. Tasted: April 2021—Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
