This is all about balance and the integration of power and finesse, with finely honed acidity supporting flavors of quince paste, dried black cherry, spun honey and candied orange zest, while rich notes of roasted walnut, coffee liqueur and toasted cardamom resonate on the finish. Hard to stop sipping. Drink now through 2028. Alison Napjus

A beautiful array of complex toastiness, fresh and roasted mushrooms, lemon, tangerine and peach, with honeysuckle and some spicy elements, too. The complexity and comfortingly rich, warming aromatic depth is in full song. The palate has vivacious, rich orange grapefruit, peach and lemon rind, with some exotic moments, and spicy flashes, too. There's a distinctive, plush and alluringly long, grapefruit and hazelnut finish. 120 individual plots here. Drink now. 159th Edition, Krug ID 215040. - James Suckling

Krug's NV Grand Cuvée 164 Edition is a total knockout. Based on the 2008 vintage, the 164th Edition shows all the crystalline tension and energy that is such a signature of the year. At times, the 164 reminds me of the 2008 vins clairs I tasted after harvest. The flavors are brisk, delineated and pulsing with energy, while the more oxidative notes that are such a signature of Krug Champagnes are not especially evident. A wine of total pedigree and class, the 164 reminds me of some of the great Grand Cuvées of the 1960s and 1970s I have been lucky to taste over the years. No Champagne lover will want to be without this spectacular, captivating wine. All that said, readers should be patient, as the 164 is painfully young, austere and in need of serious cellaring. Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

A classic Grande Cuvée showcasing exuberant freshness and ripe softness (quite how chef de cave Eric Lebel pulls this off never ceases to amaze me). This particular blend includes 130 reserve wines from a dozen vintages, with the youngest base wine being the 2004 – of course, therein lies Lebel’s secret! There’s some attractive bottle-age maturity that is just beginning to emerge from the more primary citrus, apple and pomegranate fruit, which segues into creamy almond, honeycomb, papaya, acacia and spice. It has a lovely weight and mouthfeel with lots of structured vinosity. The finish is dry, autolytic, savoury and long. Drinking Window 2017 - 2030. John Stimpfig, Decanter

Krug’s NV Brut Grande Cuvee ID 112001 – disgorged already over the winter of 2011-2012 but then further aged before release – reinforces the belief that, thankfully, even wine lovers of modest means who occasionally splurge on Krug Grande Cuvee will be rewarded with a wine that need not fear comparison with this house’s more limited and far more expensive bottlings, nor for that matter with any other wines of Champagne. The harmonious juxtaposition of creaminess and lees enrichment with bright, juicy citricity and of expansive richness with levity is stunning. (Some of the textural allure of this cuvee might, I suspect, be traceable to its significant share of Pinot Meunier, particularly that of Festigny, in a side valley of the Marne’s Left Bank.) Citrus zest notes segue seamlessly into the fine stream of CO2 without bitterness, while succulent white peach garlanded in lily-of-the-valley is laced with rich, subtly piquant nut oils and saliva-liberating salinity. Emerging suggestions of shitake and shrimp shell reduction compound the sense of capital-“U” umami in a vibrantly interactive and refreshing finish. A day after opening, this is even more vividly complex than it had been initially, with hints of fresh red raspberry lending an invigorating tang and sensation of berry seed-crunching that delivers strikingly harmonious counterpoint to both the luscious brightness of fruit and the nutty low-tones. Plan to follow this beauty for a dozen or more years. The team at Krug has long taken pains to emphasize that the task of assembling their Grande Cuvee from a hundred or more lots reflecting reserves of widely varying ages is mind-bogglingly complex. So is the result. - David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate

ID 214031. This will be re-released this year along with Krug 2004. The re-release will have had longer on the lees than the original release. The re-release may be disgorged later than the sample on which this very enthusiastic tasting note is based. Smooth and jazzy and utterly swallowable. Long and richly savoury. Fabulous! Open. Perfect now. Rich and exciting. - Jancis Robinson
