Aromas of blackberries with green olives and wet earth. The palate is dense and chewy with plenty of ripe tannins and an intense finish, showing minerals, mushrooms and sweet tobacco. Lots of character. - James Suckling

Lots of violets, tobacco, damp earth, and meaty dark fruits emerge from the 2019 Château Laforge, a medium to full-bodied, ripe, nicely concentrated, powerful 2019. With good acidity and present tannins, it still plays in the elegant, seamless style of the vintage and will offer pleasure even in its youth. - Jeb Dunnick

The 2019 Laforge is one of the more nervous wines in this range from Jonathan Maltus. That should serve it quite well in its aging. Bright floral notes and firm tannins give the wine terrific energy and verve. Hints of dark raspberry, spice, licorice, cedar and flowers all develop in the glass. Here, too, readers need to be willing to wait a few years. In most vintages, Laforge is more immediate, but the 2019 is decidedly tight, at least today. Jonathan Maltus' 2019s are superb across the board. I imagine many readers will be drawn to the micro-cuvées, Le Carré, Le Dôme and Les Astéries, in particular, and right so. In my view, though the most impressive wine in the lineup is Teyssier because of its quality at a production level that is very hard to achieve. The growing season was hot, as it was everywhere, with rain episodes in July, August and September that helped balance things out. Frost was an issue in some of the lower-lying parcels that typically inform Teyssier and Laforge. More importantly, the decision to give the wines a bit more energy while retaining all of the richness readers have come to expect yields a range of wines that really stand out in 2019. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Laforge opens with notions of pencil shavings, rose hip tea, crushed rocks and cedar chest over a core of warm black and red plums, boysenberries and spice cake. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with freshness and energy, offering finely grained tannins to support the red and black fruit layers, finishing long and fragrant. Laforge is from the JCP Maltus portfolio of skillfully crafted Saint-Émilion wines. Neil White is the head winemaker, and Thomas Duclos is a consultant here. - Lisa Perrotti Brown, Wine Advocate
