The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes captures the florality of the appellation with bunches of rose petals, a hint of peony that complements the red berry fruit (Morello and raspberry preserve). The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly crunchy tannin. I love the purity here, the energy contained within, precise and focused with a little more spiciness on the finish compared to the village cru. As it aerates I noticed darker fruit emerging plus a slight chalkiness to the tannin. Excellent—this may actually surpass the 2015 Chaumes.—Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
The colour is the same as the village wine, the flavour profile is the same, but the density on the palate is a notch more significant and there is fresher acidity. Good persistence. Quite an elegant version of Chaumes. Tasted: October 2017.—Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
Tasting note: Here the nose is aromatically similar to the straight Vosne except that the floral elements, in particular rose petal and violet, are more prominent. The round and attractively textured medium weight flavors possess a caressing, indeed even succulent, mouthfeel while offering, almost somewhat curiously, a lingering and palate coating but somewhat rustic finish. Rusticity is rare in les Chaumes so it would surprise me if it lasted.—Allen Meadows, Burghound
