The 1957 Mouton Rothschild was served blind, the first time I had encountered this particular vintage. It has a surprisingly fresh nose of wild mint, cranberry and damp undergrowth, clean and well defined, certainly expressing the typicity of Pauillac after so many years. The palate offers sweet red cherry and crushed strawberry on the entry, the acidity higher than coeval vintages and demonstrating some volatility towards the finish. However, there is impressive density and structure to this off-vintage Mouton even if it does not possess the detail and focus of the very best wines from this era. You come away from the 1957 Mouton thinking – good job. Feb 2018 - Neal Martin, Vinous Media
