A burst of pure cherry marks the aromas and flavors of this vibrant, elegant red. Earth, iron and tobacco flavors add depth, and this is densely structured, finding an equilibrium among the components. Needs a few years to come together. Best from 2023 through 2045. —B.S. Wine Spectator
Walnuts and leather with cherries and hints of dried flowers. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a chewy finish. Solid, with lots of tannins and focus for the vintage. Cool and structured. Give it two or three years to soften. Try after 2023. James Suckling
The Oddero family makes this one Barbaresco with fruit from a 1.9-hectare site in Neive. Their 2017 Barbaresco Gallina is an elegant wine that successfully downplays any excessive heat or ripeness that you might expect to find in this vintage. The wine shows bright freshness and soft or powdery tannins, all backed by cherry, wild berry and aromas of crushed mineral or limestone. Those aromas come together with pretty unity and carefully measured intensity. These are impressive results. Monica Larner – The Wine Advocate
The 2017 Barbaresco Gallina is soft, open-knit and quite pretty. Sweet spice, crushed flowers, cinnamon and macerated red cherry give the 2017 beguiling shades of nuance to match its mid-weight, translucent expression of Nebbiolo. Best of all, the Gallina will drink well right out of the gate. This is such a pretty and inviting Barbaresco. -- Antonio Galloni – Vinous Media
Neive. Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Firm nose of crushed cherries with a hint of liqueur. Supple yet poised palate with a nice dose of juicy acidity lifting the cherry fruit. Polished tannins cling to the finish. Sappy and juicy and with an elegant mid-weight palate. (WS) Walter Speller – Jancis Robinson
