Camphor, pressed rose, new leather and forest-berry aromas shape the enticing nose on this firmly structured, focused red. The vibrant youthfully austere palate shows intensity, elegance and tension, delivering red cherry, strawberry compote, orange zest and tobacco. Assertive fine-grained tannins and racy acidity provide support while a licorice note lingers on the finish—an excellent performance for the difficult vintage. Drink 2026–2034. Kerin O’Keefe

The 2014 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is powerful, deep and so elegant. It is also a terrific example of just how compelling the best 2014s are. Rose petal, dried herb, cedar, tobacco, lavender and spice are laced throughout a core of sweet red/purplish berry fruit. The Oddero 2014 Barolo Riserva Vignarionda graces us with a slender and delicate frame and plentiful aromatic nuances that bloom before your senses. This wine has a lot of pent up energy with blood orange, wild cherry, rose, lavender, dried clay, campfire ash and rusty nail. The soils of Serralunga d'Alba consist of thicker clay, and these conditions add to the intensity and structure of the wine. However, the graceful nature of the cool 2014 vintage gives this Riserva a special sense of uniformity and equilibrium that can't be achieved with the same precision in the hotter growing seasons. Pretty aromas of ripe strawberries, flowers and wet earth follow through to a medium to full body and firm tannins that are tight and poised, showing energy and vivacity. Excellent for this cool vintage and shows the excellence of this vineyard site. Give it time to soften. Better after 2023. James Suckling

Serralunga d’Alba. ‘In 2014 we didn't produce Villero [a hail storm destroyed most of the crop] and only tiny amounts of Vignarionda. We only produced 1,000 bottles of Vignarionda Riserva, and decided to age it less than our normal 10 years.’
Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Subtle and fine and with beautiful concentration. Minerally notes and hints of oak. Elegant palate with bright acidity and an almost thirst-quenching finish.
