2016 Barolo Carobric (97 WA / 95+ VM / 94 WE / 94 WS / 94 JS)

Sadly, we are seeing the last vintages of this wine that is expected to be discontinued after the 2018 vintage. The Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Carobric represents a historic blend of fruit from Rocche di Castiglione, Cannubi and Bric dël Fiasc. Because the lease on Cannubi was not renewed, Carobric lost one of its fundamental building blocks. Cannubi brought richness, generous flavors and textural suppleness to the final blend. If you are a fan of this wine, I suggest you stock up on this vintage that is poised to be one of the most memorable and age-worthy among this group of final releases. This classic vintage is rich with dark fruit, licorice, truffle-infused earth and a pretty touch of sweet hazelnut cream. Monica Larner – The Wine Advocate

The 2016 Barolo Carobric is fabulous. Nervous and tightly wound, the Carobric offers up a beguiling mix of crushed flowers, herbs, mint and red berry fruit. There is a feeling of explosive energy that runs through the 2016 that gives its tremendous appeal. Carobric, a blend of fruit from Rocche di Castiglione, Cannubi and Bric del Fiasc, is a bit less showy than some of the other Barolos in the Scavino range, but it has historically aged beautifully. I expect that will be the case here as well. Antonio Galloni – Vinous Media

Aromas of camphor, fragrant purple flowers and exotic spice waft out of the glass. On the elegantly structured palate, notes of licorice, orange zest and a hint of truffle accent a core of juicy black cherry. Polished tannins provide seamless support. Drink through 2028.-Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

This aromatic red boasts licorice, macerated cherry, rose and vanilla scents and flavors. A showy version, this is opulent and velvety in texture, offering fine concentration and firming up on the finish, where an accent of sweet spice lingers. Best from 2023 through 2042. 500 cases made, 150 cases imported.-Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

A rich, layered Barolo with candied-cherry, ripe-berry and some citrus-rind character. It’s full-bodied with round tannins and a creamy texture, where the fruit covers the tannins in a linear way. Drinkable now, but much better in 2022.-James Suckling

2016 Barolo Cannubi (99 KO / 97 WA / 97 JS / 96 VM / 96 WS)

Perfumed berry, fragrant purple flower, chopped mint and baking spice are just some of the aromas you’ll find on this drop-dead gorgeous wine. Impeccably balanced, structured, and loaded with finesse, it boasts a smooth texture, doling out juicy Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and white pepper alongside a backbone of polished tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2024–2036.--Kerin O'keefe

he Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Cannubi is another wine that should greatly interest avid collectors. It will not be produced after the 2018 vintage, but this 2016 vintage awards us with first-rate quality and precision, making for a memorable send-off. This expression from Cannubi offers tight and aromatic fruit with wild cherry, rose petal and powdered licorice root. It also shows a slightly dusty or mineral quality with finely nuanced tannins and a tapered or streamlined mouthfeel that adds to its delicate elegance. The effect here is polished with glossy intensity.—Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

What gorgeous aromas of ripe fruit with leather, toffee and walnut character. It’s full-bodied, yet so reserved and polished with beautifully crafted tannins and fabulous length. A serious follow-up to the great 2015. Best after 2022.—James Suckling

The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is a striking wine. Deep, rich and beautifully layered, the 2016 has it all. Rose petal, mint, star anise, blood orange and raspberry open up first, followed by a cascade of red fruit and floral notes that literally soar out of the glass. The Cannubi possesses tremendous textural resonance in a style that balances the sensuality of this site with a good deal of structure. It is also one of the wines in this lineup that was aged entirely in cask.—Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

A bright, elegant red, delivering pure cherry, strawberry and rose aromas and flavors, with a hint of wild herb. Though harmonious and delicate, this has a firm structure underneath, and the finish is long and resonant. The aftertaste echoes with fruit and floral notes, adding spice to the mix. Best from 2022 through 2042. 275 cases made, 100 cases imported.—Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator.

2016 Barolo Bric del Fiasc (98 WA / 98 WE / 96 WS / 96 VM / 95 JS / 17+ JR)

Drawing its fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc shows dimension, depth, precision and power. The wine opens to a dark garnet color with a saturated hue, leading to a full, all-encompassing bouquet. The Barolo Bric dël Fiasc is often the most representative wine in the Scavino portfolio, and never has this been more true than in this classic vintage. Dark fruit, licorice, spice and ferrous earth build a fluid and multifaceted bouquet. The mouthfeel sits firm and tight on the palate today, promising to evolve and soften tomorrow. This is a bottle for your cellar.-Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

What a gorgeous showing. It opens with heady aromas of menthol, forest berry, iris and new leather while the enveloping, full-bodied palate delivers raspberry compote, ripe Marasca cherry, licorice and baking spice before a minty finish. Enveloping, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide perfect balance. Thanks to the ripe, juicy fruit, you'd never guess this had an abv of 15%. Drink 2023–2036. — Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

This vibrant red is concentrated and supple, bursting with cherry, plum, licorice and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. Offers a sense of elegance, with a slightly chewy texture, along with excellent length. Best from 2023 through 2040. 880 cases made, 275 cases imported.- Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

The 2016 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is a powerful, muscular wine. Youthfully austere and tannic, the 2016 is going to need a number of years to come around, but it is magnificent, even in the early going. Layers of building tannins enshroud a core of dark Nebbiolo fruit, with hints of dried herbs, iron, leather and sweet tobacco that develop with a bit of coaxing. As always, Bric del Fiasc has a feral intensity to it. The 2016 is an especially fine edition and also a terrific example of the style of this Castiglione Falletto site.-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Very aromatic with roses, strawberries and some cherry blossom, too. Medium to full body and firm, silky tannins with finesse and intensity at the same time. Try after 2022.-James Suckling

Castiglione Falletto. Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Balsamic and almost a little ethereal on the nose. Generous fruit framed by bags of ripe grainy tannins adding contrast. Quite a powerful structure but nothing over the top. Muscular finish with cherry fruit and a hint of fruit cake.-Walter Speller, Jancis Robinson
