Black currant, plum, herb, thyme and sweet spice aromas and flavors mesh seamlessly with the tight matrix of tannins in this expressive, complex red. Cabernet Franc is the on-trend grape variety in Bolgheri due to its ability to achieve good ripeness here while preserving its natural fresh character. Sondraia is certainly the best buy of the moment among the Superiores thanks to its hand-crafted winemaking. The precise fruit is joined by new oak and clove aromas, and a hint of the typical dried eucalyptus leaf varietal character. A creamy yet fresh palate provides density to this pleasurable Bolgheri. The fresh-tobacco and berry character is impressive with cedar, iodine and blackberry undertones. Full-bodied and very polished with beautiful fruit and round tannins. Delicious now but hold until 2020. - James Suckling
Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc (10%) make up the lovely 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia. The fruit represents a best selection from various vineyard sites. The majority Cabernet Sauvignon component means the tannins are very fine, and you get sweetness from the Merlot. Expect notes of cinnamon and clove behind sage, rosemary and herbs. This wine offers a very balanced approach, with good harmony on the nose. In 2013 they made 80,000 bottles, but only 40,000 bottles of Sondraia were made in 2015 to reflect that special selection of fruit. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
Poggio al Tesoro is a 70 hectare property in Bolgheri acquired in 2002 by the Allegrini family. The first vineyard they bought, Le Sondraia, is next door to Ornellaia and was previously rented by them. It is 12 hectares in size and is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.
