Alpine herb, pressed rose, new leather and black tea aromas lead the nose on the superb Montefico 2019 Riserva. Showing the impeccable class and intensity this cru is celebrated for, it’s youthfully austere but also incredibly savory. The firmly structured palate delivers ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice, almond liqueur and saline mineral notes accompanied by a firm backbone of tightly-woven, close-grained tannins. Bright acidity gives it great aging potential. Drink 2029–2044. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe

Montefico faces south-southeast, with cool winds from the north. The high level of calcium in the soil contributes assertive tannins and an austere character. The 2019 Montefico exhibits ripe cherry and raspberry flavors, rich, yet with a swath of dense, dusty tannins underneath, leaving a chalky feel on the finish. Dark ruby red, the 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico reveals expressive notes of black raspberry, mossy earth, black truffle, leather, and violets. Medium-bodied, it fills the palate with ripe tannins, salty earth, mouthwatering acidity, and a rich feel. It’s more powerful and assertive in its structure, with building tannins and a rich feel to its texture.
