Intense aromas of black cherry, pomegranate and tamarind mark this juicy red. Smooth, with well-integrated tannins lending a dusty feel as the finish plays out. The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, half from vines planted in 1936 and the other half from vines planted in 1978, has a very floral and expressive bouquet with blueberry, cassis and violet aromas. This is quite powerful but it has a little more delineation than the other reds. The palate is medium-bodied with a dab of licorice on the entry, firm but fine tannins and a pleasing edginess toward the sustained finish. Excellent. Drink 2020-2032. –Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
