This is a massively concentrated and enormously structured wine with so much smoke and spice, but there’s also so much rose aroma that it comes off as charming rather than imposing. A tiny plot of 0.5 hectares produces only 1,500 bottles each year. As Olivier Humbrecht says, Rangen imposes its strength on the grape variety. It is true; there is a delicate bouquet of spicy, almost flinty, smoky and orchard fruit aromas. The palate, perfectly balanced, is slightly tannic, with a well-managed acidity that brings a long, airy finish. It’s a beautiful, classic example of this terroir.
