The 2020 Clos René showed beautifully, with a pure, elegant style offering lots of cassis and black cherry fruits as well as notes of Christmas spice, flowers, and cedar. The 2020 Clos René is very intense, almost backward on the nose of blackberry, bilberry, crushed violet and truffle aromas, and even a little blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannins and a bold, dense midpalate. I cannot recall a Clos René as structured as this latest release. Quite peppery toward the finish, which leaves behind a long, tobacco-tinged aftertaste. This is an excellent Clos René but it should be afforded several years’ cellaring once in bottle. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media
