Bold and beautiful, the 2019 Perno has high toned fruit recalling crunchy red cherry and raspberry accented by white pepper and star anise. Showing great energy, elegance and structure, it’s still youthfully austere but already balanced, with racy tension, firm tannins and a weightless finesse. This is one to lose in your cellar. Drink 2029–2049. Abv: 15% Kerin O’Keefe
The translucent ruby-colored 2019 Barolo Perno is even spicier, revealing a great nose of wild fresh red cherries, fresh roses, sweet fruit, and sweet fresh herbs. On the palate, it offers ripe and approachable tannins with a plush, velvety feel. I love this wine, which has both savory richness and great length, with long notes of apricot on the finish, and it’s going to have a wide drinking window. Fantastic. Drink 2024-2050.-Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck
Shows typical Monforte muscle along with the structure of the vintage, combined with ripe cherry and plum fruit flavors. Revealing tobacco, mineral and underbrush accents, this red is persistent and solid on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2045. From Italy.—B.S., Wine Spectator
Monforte d’Alba. Pale ruby. More open and perfumed than the Villero of the same vintage and with savoury, minerally notes. Deep, red fruit with a deep layer of fine-grained tannins. Very long, tannic and tactile. Deserves much more time.-Walter Speller, JancisRobinson
