This wine delivers an exceptional quality of fruit. The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello is vinous and raw with an unmistakably authentic quality that gives this wine character and a specific territorial identity. You taste the flavors of the Tuscan Coast with that "macchia mediterrana," or Mediterranean brush, with ripe cherry, plum, black olive and sweet cinnamon spice. At this young stage, the wine's oak imprint is evident, but we can look forward to this relaxing and tapering down with more bottle age. Some 8,000 bottles were made.—Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
Alberello is the Italian name for bush vines, one of the most undervalued training systems in Tuscany. Employed by Grattamacco for austere varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the result is often outstanding. Cassis, cherry kernel and leafy aromas come before a hint of minerality. On the palate it shows firm, grainy tannins without any dryness at the end, where instead it opens up to reveal sweet toasted tobacco and straw notes. This will last well thanks to its layered profile and great balance.—AF, Decanter
I love the herbal complexity with dark brambleberries, fresh herbs and cedar. Medium to full body, juicy and endearing tannins and a floral finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.-James Suckling
