Saturated with cherry, raspberry and violet aromas and flavors, this pure and silky red is both elegant and beautifully structured. Very expressive today, already showing harmony and excellent length on the finish, with mineral and underbrush accents adding depth. Best from 2025 through 2042. From Italy.—B.S., Wine Spectator Insider HOT Wine
The 2019 Monvigliero from Paolo Scavino is a showstopper, with enticing scents of blue flower, ripe berry, camphor and mocha that segue over to the elegantly structured palate along with raspberry compote, licorice and tobacco. A long mineral finish lifts the delicious flavors while tightly knit, velvety tannins provide seamless support. Drink 2029–2039. Abv: 14% --Kerin O’Keefe
Scavino first bottled Monvigliero as a separate single-vineyard wine in 2007. Only 0.83 hectares in size and situated on limestone soils, its proximity to the Tanaro river moderates the microclimate. The nose is intense and pungent, exhibiting pure red fruits and no balsamic tones. The attack is lush but also forthright and vibrant, the stunning fruit supported by underlying acidity. Very concentrated, it shows welcome austere grip. Textured but elegant, this imperious Barolo is built to last, and the finish is exceptionally long.--Stephen Brook, Decanter
Aromas of slate, raspberry, black cherry and dried strawberry follow through to a full body with firm and linear tannins, and a racy acidity that runs long and bright. Needs time to soften but wonderful length. Drink after 2028. - James Suckling
Coming from Verduno, the 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is nuanced with spices and floral elegance and is pure and ripe with raspberry liqueur, rose petal, peppercorn, and cedar. This medium-bodied red is svelte and refined while having good concentration and drive, with notes of pomegranate, orange zest, and dusty earth. Zesty and lifted, this will take another couple of years to open and mature into the graceful wine it is destined to become. Drink 2025-2040.— Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck
